The Ugandan military is conducting an investigation into an attack on an African Union military base manned by the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) in Bulo Marer town, Somalia, on Friday morning. According to UPDF spokesperson Felix Kulayigye, the attack was carried out by “foreign insurgents,” although he did not provide further details. The military is currently cross-checking the information with the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (Atmis) headquarters before releasing an official statement.
Atmis confirmed the attack in a tweet, stating that the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Bulo Marer was targeted by Al-Shabab. They mentioned that Atmis forces are currently assessing the security situation, and more information will be provided later.
Reports suggest that the attackers believed to be Al-Shabab militants, made an attempt to storm the base located approximately 120 kilometers south of Mogadishu. The attack was accompanied by a series of explosions. While there are no immediate reports of casualties, local sources indicate a significant presence of militants in Bulo Marer town.
The UPDF, as part of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), has been actively involved in supporting the Somali government’s efforts to combat Al-Shabab and stabilize the country. The attack on the AU military base underscores the ongoing security challenges faced by AMISOM and the threat posed by Al-Shabab’s insurgency.
As the investigation continues, the Ugandan military and AMISOM will work to enhance security measures and devise strategies to counter the activities of Al-Shabab and other militant groups in Somalia. The incident highlights the importance of sustained international support and cooperation to address the complex security situation in the region and promote stability and peace in Somalia.
