Somalia Receives Message of Optimism and Revitalization from Guterres

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has urged donors to support Somalia as it struggles with drought and the risk of famine. Addressing a news conference in the capital, Mogadishu, Guterres called for support for Somalia’s efforts to defeat the Islamist group Al-Shabaab, promote human rights and address climate change. Some 8.3 million Somalis require urgent assistance, according to the UN. The current Humanitarian Response Plan for Somalia is seeking $2.6bn, but has only received $347m, or 15% of the total, so far. During a visit that took in Mogadishu, Baidoa, and the South West State, Guterres also met civil society organizations and pledged support for women and young people in political life.

In addition to the challenges of conflict, terrorism, and a severe humanitarian crisis, Somalia is also facing the impact of climate change. The country has experienced five consecutive poor rainy seasons, resulting in drought and crop failures that have devastated livelihoods and exacerbated food insecurity. This situation is expected to worsen, with some 6.5 million Somalis facing high levels of acute food insecurity between now and June, and the risk of famine looming.

To address these challenges, the United Nations is calling for urgent assistance from the international community to support Somalia’s efforts to defeat Al-Shabaab, build resilience, stabilize liberated areas, and provide much-needed humanitarian assistance. The UN is also committed to supporting national and regional efforts to protect human rights and combat terrorism and violent extremism.

Furthermore, the UN recognizes the critical role of Somali civil society organizations, particularly those working in women’s affairs and empowerment, climate change, persons with disabilities, youth, and marginalized groups. The full participation of these groups in political life is essential for good governance and can help prevent and reduce violence.

In conclusion, the UN’s solidarity visit to Somalia during the Holy Month of Ramadan highlights the importance of coming together to advance peace, security, sustainable development, and human rights, and build a better future for all Somalis.
