Somalia Floods Displace 140,000, Threaten to Worsen Waterborne Diseases

The devastating floods in Somalia have worsened over the past two weeks, affecting approximately 175,000 people, with 140,000 displaced. The floods have caused extensive damage to shelters, farmland, and livestock, while also damaging roads and forcing schools to close. The worst-hit areas are the Baardheere district in Jubaland State and Baidoa in Southwest State.

The situation is further compounded by concerns that the rains could lead to a spike in waterborne diseases. Since the beginning of the year, at least 4,000 suspected cholera cases and 17 deaths have been reported.

If the rains continue, the flooding could affect up to 1.6 million people, displacing more than 600,000. In response, the UN and humanitarian partners have provided assistance to at least 111,000 people, including food, shelter, cash assistance, and hygiene kits. Efforts are also underway to rehabilitate latrines and pre-position cholera kits and investigation tools.

However, there is still an urgent need for essential items, such as food, shelter, and healthcare, to alleviate the suffering of those affected. It’s worth noting that the Humanitarian Response Plan for this year requires $2.6 billion, but as of today, only 15% of the funding has been secured.
