Russia Offers Military Equipment to Somalia in Fight Against Terrorism

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on Friday that Russia is prepared to supply the Somali army with military equipment to support its efforts in combating terrorism. The offer was made during talks between Lavrov and his Somali counterpart, Abshir Omar Jama, in Moscow. Lavrov reiterated Russia’s commitment to meeting the material requirements of the Somali army as they continue their fight against extremist groups operating within Somali territory, including al-Shabaab and al-Qaeda.

This offer further highlights Russia’s growing interest in Africa, positioning itself as a significant player in countries grappling with conflicts and challenges, often overshadowing Western influence. Notably, the Russian private military company Wagner has already deployed mercenaries to several African countries, including the Central African Republic, Mali, Mozambique, and Libya.

Somalia has been a frequent target of attacks by al-Shabaab, an affiliate of al-Qaeda in East Africa, hindering the nation’s recovery from prolonged conflicts. The Somali government recently launched a significant offensive against al-Shabaab, aiming to curb the extremist group’s influence and restore stability.

Russia’s approach in Africa involves forging alliances with regimes or groups that have been isolated by the West or face internal challenges and insurgencies. In return for military support from Wagner, African leaders grant Russia access to their valuable resources, such as oil, gas, gold, diamonds, and minerals, thereby solidifying Russian influence in the region.

This growing influence was evident when 17 out of the 35 African countries abstained from a United Nations resolution condemning the invasion of Ukraine, showcasing Russia’s sway. Despite Somalia’s vote in favor of the resolution, the country has been working on improving its relations with Russia, severed in 1978 when Moscow supported Ethiopia in a conflict with Somalia.

Russia’s offer to supply military equipment to Somalia highlights its strategic approach to gain influence and secure access to resources in Africa while positioning itself as a key player in countering terrorism on the continent.
