Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia aim to reopen official border crossings in a new initiative for regional development and security

A new project called “Deris Wanaag” in Somali, or “Good Neighborliness” in English, aims to reopen official border crossings between Kenya, Somalia, and Ethiopia that have been closed or partially closed due to security issues. The initiative, funded by the U.K., is expected to improve socio-economic development between the three countries. Speaking in the border town of Mandera during the launch, Kenya’s Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, emphasized that infrastructural development must be freed from armed conflicts for the industries to prosper. The initiative seeks to find a lasting solution to the perennial insecurity and instability in the Horn of Africa nations.

Although various border-crossing points have been officially closed at times over the last decade, militants, criminals, and regular migrants still cross borders with little problem. Al-Shabab, a Somali militant group, sent hundreds of fighters into Ethiopia last year before being pushed back by regional forces. Thus, the governments plan to tackle the root cause of terrorism through intelligence and greater manpower on the border to catch al-Shabab insurgents.

Kenya closed its official border posts with Somalia in 2012 to hinder al-Shabab’s movements, including the Mandera border post, as well as Lamu, Wajir, and Garissa border crossings. However, earlier this year, Kenya announced the reopening of its border with Somalia and Ethiopia. The project’s strategic investment will focus on improving road and water infrastructure networks and enhancing education to eradicate conflict. British High Commissioner to Kenya Jane Marriot praised the project, noting that the region faces numerous challenges, including drought, resource conflicts, armed proliferation, and terrorism. Somalia Minister for Security Mohamed Ahmed Sheikh welcomed the project, saying that it is timely and will effectively tackle cross-border insecurity challenges. The initiative’s ultimate goal is to enhance cooperation and peaceful coexistence between the three nations.
